Transportation Planning
Transportation Planning involves implementation of the Town’s adopted Comprehensive Transportation Plan, conducting special studies, managing the Morrisville Smart Shuttle, and working collaboratively with transportation partners such as the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) to advance transportation network improvements within Morrisville and around the Triangle region.

Regional Transportation Planning
The Triangle Region is a place of connected towns and cities requiring transportation planning efforts to span across multiple jurisdictions. Below are some of the regional transportation planning efforts in which Morrisville is an engaged stakeholder.
Blueprint for Safety Plan
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) recently developed a comprehensive regional multimodal safety action plan in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), referred to as the Blueprint for Safety. The Blueprint for Safety identified strategies and actions to improve roadway transportation safety throughout the CAMPO region. The plan's development kicked off in early 2024 and was completed in the summer of 2025. Learn more about the plan here.
Destination 2055 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and Triangle West Transportation Planning Organization (TWTPO) are working collaboratively to develop Destination 2055, the next MTP for the Triangle Region. Destination 2055 will be a long-range plan for transportation improvements across the region, including roadway, transit, rail, bicycle, pedestrian, and other transportation projects over the next 30 years. Triangle Bikeway
Through a multi-agency effort, a feasibility and implementation study was completed in April 2022 studying a 17-mile shared-use path connecting Raleigh to Chapel Hill along the I-40 corridor, including a stretch along the northern edge of the Town of Morrisville. Access the project website here.

Wake Transit Program
The Wake Transit Program is a taxpayer-supported public transportation expansion investment program primarily funded through a dedicated transit sales tax approved by Wake County voters in 2016. GoTriangle and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) work together to accomplish Wake Transit program goals, which include an annual program budget, known as the Annual Wake Transit Work Plan, and planning for future investment through adoption of a multi-year Wake Transit Plan and Wake Bus Plan. The Wake Transit Program also funds the Community Funding Area Program, which provides financial support toward the operation of the Morrisville Smart Shuttle.

Wake BRT: Western Corridor Rapid Bus Extension Major Investment Study
The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) led a major investment study identifying and evaluating potential alignment options for extending the planned Raleigh to Cary Bus Rapid Transit service to the Research Triangle Park (RTP) through Morrisville. The study concluded in early 2023 with a recommended locally preferred alternative utilizing NC 54/Evans Road/McCrimmon Parkway. Further study and analysis are expected with a Concept of Operations Study, which kicked off in the summer of 2025.

Major Roadway Projects
Several major roadway projects within the Town of Morrisville are expected to be finished or to begin construction over the next five years. Below is an update on major roadway projects within the Town of Morrisville that are either being led and/or managed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).
Note: Project timelines are subject to change and will be updated as new information becomes available.

- McCrimmon Parkway (U-5747) - West of Davis Drive to Perimeter Park Drive
Widen from two lanes to four lanes, with median. Includes a wider sidewalk and bike lanes, a flyover at the railroad tracks and NC 54, and continuous flow/displaced left-hand turn lanes on Davis Drive. Utility relocation is expected to occur in 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2027. This NCDOT project includes Town funded betterments. View U-5747 project map.
- NC 54 (U-5750) - Shiloh Glen Drive to Perimeter Park Drive
Widen from two lanes to four lanes, with median. Includes additional lanes near NC 540 interchange, a 10-foot multi-use path, and some changes to access along NC 54. Utility relocation is expected to occur mid-2024 through mid-2025. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2026. This NCDOT project includes Town funded Town funded betterments.
- Aviation Parkway (U-5811) - NC 54 to I-40
Widen from two lanes to four lanes, with median. Proposes quadrant roadway intersection at NC 54 to improve traffic flow. The 2026-2035 State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) allocates right-of-way acquisition funding in FY26 and construction funding in FY30.
