Sergeant William Earl Godwin

Sgt. Godwin and his dog Gray

Killed in the line of duty on May 22, 1997

Sgt. Earl Godwin served the Town of Morrisville with love, honor, pride, and integrity. He gave his life protecting the people of the town he loved and doing the job he loved. Sgt. Godwin will be in our hearts forever.

On Thursday, May 22, 1997, Sgt. Godwin was killed in an accident while responding to an emergency call. While driving to the scene, a vehicle broadsided his Range Rover at the intersection of McCrimmon Parkway and Church Street, causing it to roll over and eject him from the vehicle.

Sgt. Godwin was airlifted to Duke Medical Center, where his watch ended. His Belgian Malinois K-9 partner, Gray, survived the crash.

Sgt. Godwin was a life-long resident of Morrisville who enjoyed riding his motorcycle and taking boat trips on Jordan Lake. He was survived by his wife Allison, his daughter Mercedes, his mother, his grandmother, and a brother.
